Meet Jack the Donkey Small Snuggler 🫏

The newest addition to the growing farm family collection.

 

Terminology

The pattern uses US terminology and the piece is worked in continuous rounds, not separate rounds.

Materials

(Can be changed to suit different yarn sizes)

  • 4.5mm, 6.5mm & 8mm crochet hooks
  • Size 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket used)
  • Brown yarn
  • White yarn
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • Darning needle
  • 16mm safety eyes


Abbreviations

  • MC = magic circle
  • ch = chain
  • Sc = single crochet
  • Inc = increase
  • Dec = decrease
  • CC = colour change
  • FLO = front loop only
  • BLO = back loop only
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • SLST = slip stitch
  • FO = fasten off
  • BBL = bobble stitch


Ears (Make 4)

(Make 2 white + 2 brown)

Using 4.5mm hook

c1/t = chain 1 turn
work / t = turn

  1. Chain 5
  2. In second chain from hook Sc 4, turn
  3. Sc 3, c1/t
  4. Sc 3, turn
  5. Sc 2, c1/t
  6. Sc 2, c1/t
  7. Sc 1, FO

Make 2 of each colour.
Join pieces with Sc 16 around:

  • 7 stitches left side
  • 7 stitches right side
  • 2 stitches in bottom corner

FO leaving 3 SLST where you will Sc ear to head.


Head

Using brown yarn + 6.5mm hook
Working from back of head toward nose

CCW = colour change to white
(Bobble) BBL x3 = 3 incomplete HDC

  1. MC Sc 6 [6]
  2. Inc in each stitch around [12]
  3. (Sc 1, Inc 1) x6 [18]
  4. (Sc 2, Inc) x6 [24]
    5-6. Sc 24 for 2 rounds [24 each round]
  5. Sc 3, Sc 2 to attach ear, Sc 3, Sc 2 attach ear, Sc 14 [24]
    Attach ear white side facing nose
  6. Sc 24 [24]
  7. Sc 3, Dec 1, Sc 1, Dec 1, Sc 1, Dec 1, Sc 13 [21]
  8. Sc 21

Place eyes between rounds 9-10, approximately 8-9 stitches apart.

  1. (Sc 2, Dec 1) x5, Sc 1 [16]
  2. Sc 16
    Stuff as you go
    13-14. CCW Sc 16 x2 rounds

Important Note

For the next round ensure bobbles are centered to the nose.
Make adjustments of 1-3 stitches depending on yarn type or tension.

  1. Sc 2, BBL, Sc 3, BBL, Sc 9
    Bobbles should be approximately 6 stitches apart and centered to head
  2. (Sc 2, Dec 1) x4 [12]
    Stuff
  3. (Sc 1, Dec 1) x4 [8]

FO and close remaining stitches.


Arms (Make 2)

Using white yarn + 6.5mm hook

  1. MC Sc 8
  2. BLO Sc 8
  3. BLO CCB SLST 8
  4. BLO (Sc 2, Dec 1) x2 [6]
    5-7. Sc 6 x3 rounds
    Stuff
    FO - Sc 3 along top


Legs (Make 2)

Using white yarn + 6.5mm hook

  1. MC Sc 8
  2. Inc 2, Sc 2, Inc 2, Sc 2 [12]
  3. BLO 12
  4. Dec 6 [6]
  5. Sc 6
    Stuff

FO - Sc 3 along top


Body

Using brown yarn + 8mm hook

SLST 8 in a circle onto base of head.

With the head upside down and nose facing you, place 8 slip stitches in a circle from rows 7-9 directly in the center of the body area.

Find the most centered stitches:

  • Start on one side
  • Return 2-3 stitches from nose
  • Approximately 3-4 stitches wide

Important Note

For attaching arms and legs, make adjustments of 1-3 stitches depending on yarn type or tension.

  1. Sc 8
  2. Inc 1 x8 [16]
  3. HDC 10, attach arm with 3 Sc, HDC 3 [16]
  4. HDC 2, attach arm with 3 Sc, HDC 11 [16]
  5. HDC 1, (HDC 2, HDC Inc 1) x5 [21]
    6-8. HDC 21 [21]
  6. (HDC 2, Dec 1) x5, HDC 1 [16]
  7. HDC 15, attach leg with Sc 1
  8. Continue attaching legs:
    Sc 2, Sc 1, attach next leg with Sc 3, Sc 10 [16]
  9. Sc Dec 8 [8]
  10. Sc Dec 4 [4]

FO and sew remaining 4 stitches closed.


Mane (Hair)

Using both yarn colours together + 8mm hook

Knot the end so you can keep tension tight.
Working down the back of the head.

  1. Yarn on between ears
    (1 stitch below each ear, not directly in row 1)
  2. Sc 3
  3. HDC 3
  4. DC 2
  5. SLST and hide tail in body


Tail

Using 8mm hook

  1. Yarn on
  2. Chain 7
  3. In second chain from hook Sc 3 in one stitch
  4. SLST down tail and hide tail through body
